Running Banter

98% of the fun in Triathlon is the training. The other 2% is the measure of how much fun we had.

Running With the Wolves

Sheila and I spent the weekend at the North Shore of Lake Superior enjoying a the long Presidents Day weekend (Sheila is a teacher, and teachers love this weekend).

On Saturday night we went for a candle lit snowshoe at Gooseberry Falls State Park. Beautiful night!

Sunday morning I headed out for a morning run up into the hills away from the lake. The run didn't seem too hilly, considering the mini-mountains near the lake, but the run felt slow. About a half-mile into the run I started to see deer tracks in the freshly fallen snow, I remembered a conversation we had with some friends at dinner the previous night about wolves roaming the sides of roads looking for deer that had been hit by cars... Sure enough about a mile later I saw wolf prints on both sides of the road heading the same direction I was heading. VERY COOL. But, I never saw them... About three miles into the hills, I turned around and headed back - and I was flying. Apparently, the hills were bigger than I thought, and the three miles back down went by VERY quick. When I checked my watch later, it showed an ascend of 350 feet up to the turn-around. Later, Sheila and I went out and took pictures of the prints:

This morning, the weather turned cold with a strong North wind. As we were driving south along the Lake Superior shoreline, we saw a surf kayaker out enjoying the big waves - it was 8 degrees! It look cold, but it also looked like a lot of fun:

About a mile further south, we saw this sign out in front of a Lake Superior supper club.

We know they didn't give up food and alcohol for lent... Maybe they figured that with the new Minnesota Clean Indoor Act, they had already given up enough!

See you out there.

I WANT TO RIDE MY BIKE(S)!!!!!

I love to run... But, I'm really getting the itch to hit the open road and cruise!

I just spent a week in Tampa on business... 70+ degrees, 56 miles of running in shorts and singlet, one run in a hard rain (I love to run in a warm rain storm). After running in tights for the past 4 months, I have that spring rash on my thighs from wearing shorts for the first time (I kept forgetting to apply the Body Glide).

I returned to Minneapolis last night, and woke up to -13 degrees and a -33 wind chill. A harsh reminder that it is going to be a LONG time before I can head out for a long bike ride. Even if I had a cyclocross bike (which I haven't purchase yet), -33 is not my idea of a relaxing cruise...

On the other hand it is still Winter and there are plenty of fun activities to keep us occupied until the spring thaw. Next weekend Sheila and I are heading up to the north shore of Lake Superior for a long weekend and some snowshoeing. On Saturday night we are doing a candlelight snowshoe, which should be a blast.

Maybe in March I can start to ride again...

See you out there.
